The Local Economy

The economy of the Gallatin Valley is four prong--Technology, Agriculture, Tourism and Government.

Gallatin Valley ranks first in milk, potato and alfalfa production in the state. Annual cash receipts exceed $31 million for livestock and $32 million for crops. Amber waves of grain are definitely a part of the Gallatin Valley.

With Yellowstone Park at our back door, tourism is a major part of the economy. Combined with no sales tax, beautiful mountains to camp in and ski on plus many historical sites to see, people choose Bozeman as their vacation destination.

Montana State University is one of the largest employers in Bozeman. Many hi-tech companies have relocated to Bozeman because of the outstanding engineering and research facilities at MSU. These firms work with fiber optics, biotechnologies computer program design and environmental technologies.

Anchor Gaming is one of the largest private employers in Bozeman. The maker of video polar and keno machine employs over 300 people. Other major employers include Bozeman Deaconess Hospital, Bozeman Public Schools, Rightnow Technologies and the U.S. National Forest Service.

With the advances in technology and transportation, many families choose to live in the Bozeman area and work elsewhere either via computer, fax or commuting.

Economic Development
The Gallatin Development Corporation helps local businesses, new business and those looking to relocate a business to the Bozeman area. They assist basic sector employers, particularly those in technology and manufacture, and provide counseling through the Small Business Development Center. GDC works with MSU to promote the commercialization of new technologies. Montana Taxes
Montana's individual income tax is a progressive income tax, similar to the federal personal income tax. This is based on the net income of residents and not resident individuals, fiduciaries and beneficiaries of estates and trusts. Residents of Montana are taxed on income from all sources, regardless of where earned. Non-residents are taxed on income earned from any Montana source.

Property taxes
All property, except agricultural land, has an assessed value that is equal to its market value. In Bozeman, property taxes are about one to 1 3/4 percent of the property value.
